Spring 2014 AFP/AAC Newsletter - Issue #17 - page 6

Back in October, 2013, at its an-
nual public meeting hosted by the
Royal Canadian Legion at Legion
House in Kanata, the Royal Canadian
Mint unveiled a silver coin marking
the 50th anniversary of Canadian
Peacekeeping in Cyprus.
“Canada is celebrated as an active
supporter and defender of peace and
this coin is a keepsake that will be
treasured by those who value the men
and women who have served as Peace-
keepers,” said Mr. Ian E. Bennett,
President and CEO of the Royal Cana-
dian Mint. “The Mint has long demon-
strated its commitment to honoring
Canada’s veterans and on the eve of
the centennial of the First World War
and the 75th anniversary of the Second
World War, I am pleased to confirm
that we are developing an extensive
coin program to commemorate these
watershed moments in Canada’s his-
tory.”
Canadian battalions/regiments re-
mained in Cyprus until the mid-1990's
and a small group of observers are still
present today. UNFICYP is now in its
50th year and has witnessed a mini-
mum of one tour from virtually every
infantry battalion in Canada, with ar-
moured and artillery regiments also
serving.
Mr. Bennett also announced the
Royal Canadian Mint’s upcoming
commemorations for the First and
Second World Wars in 2014 and be-
yond. This year marks the 100th an-
niversary of the beginning of WWI,
the Canadian government is investing
in a six-year commemorative coin set
marking the remembrance. The special
silver dollars will show tributes to
WWI and WWII that will carry into
the year 2020, highlighting over 50
military milestones.
With 100 years passed, it is impor-
tant to remember those who served
during the first, second, and Korean
wars and the Royal Canadian Mint ex-
pects the coins to be a success. Their
goal is to enlighten both young and old
of the victories and sacrifices incurred
by the Canadian Armed Forces during
these historical battles.
