Retired Member Monthly Contribution
Cost Sharing Percentages
Our last issue (No.17 Spring 2014) contained an article of
the impending increase in our health care premiums that
prompted observations from several members.
The observations are related to a table in the article that
shows how much pensioners pay monthly for their insurance
and how much our former employer pays. The table was sup-
posed to reflect the 25% / 75% split between pensioner/em-
ployer but it clearly does not!
When the article was prepared, we focused on ensuring that
the pensioner share of the premium was accurate, which it is.
The table itself was copied from the National Joint Coun-
cil (NJC) website:
We made numerous attempts to obtain accurate details on
the government share of the premiums with phone calls to the
NJC, Treasury Board, our Pension Office and Sun Life. No-
body that we spoke to in any of these agencies was able to pro-
vide the information nor a contact within their organization who
could.
Bottom line: we are confident that the current pensioner
premiums in the first table are accurate and that they will in-
crease annually beginning next April 1st by the percentages
shown in the second table repeated above. In other words, on
1st April, 2018 you will begin paying exactly double what you
are paying today.
